Today we attended our first flock swap at Agrisupply in Garner, NC!
We had a great time and it was a little scary being our very first time attending one as a business.
It was SO windy! We were constantly afraid the tent was going to blow away, but it was a nice day overall, not too hot and sunny after a week of rain.
We were not sure how many to bring and we are still driving a 2001 Ford Taurus so there was a limit to how many we could bring. We brought one of our roosters that was a Bantam that didn’t really match anything else in the flock and he sold which was great. We brought 6 dozen eggs and 4 of those sold, we sell them for $5 a dozen and we all know the price of eggs these days are crazy so for farm fresh pasture raised eggs we think that is a great price. We currently have a ton of 10 week old pullets of different breeds so we brought 6 Production Reds and unfortunately none of those sold but there was a lot of interest. The big hit today was our Polish chickens. We regularly hatch Polish and have a lot of pure Tolbunt Polish as well as some Polish that are mixed with Golden Laced Polish. Everyone loved their funky hair styles and those sold out quickly. We currently have a ton of 4 week old mixed breed chickens so we brought 10 of those and people really loved holding them and getting to pet them, people are always surprised how soft a chicken’s feathers are.
Our mixed breed has so many different varieties to them. We have two roosters a Bielefelder and a Barred Rock so they all have some of that in them but our hens come in a huge variety we have:
Barred rock, Bielefelder, Black Polish, Black Australorp, Black copper marans, Brahma, Calico princess, Candycorn Polish, Cream legbar, Easter egger, Golden comet, Golden laced Wyandotte, ISA brown, Midnight majesty marans, Olive egger, Silkie, Speckled Sussex, Tolbunt Polish, and White leghorn
The results of all those different breeds can really make for some interesting feather patterns!
Overall it was a great day, we had a ton of fun getting to meet other farmers in the community as well as getting to interact with so many people interested in chickens, the staff at Agrisupply are so nice and we cannot wait for the next one!
